Another pruning season

It’s been a rough couple of weeks. A lot of time spent reflecting, soul-searching, and asking God what direction He wants me to head in.

Here’s part of an email a friend sent filled with really encouraging words.

At the beginning of John 15, it talks of Jesus being the true vine and God the vinedresser. Verse 4, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” Verse 11, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.”

That is our recipe for full Joy, not discounting that in verse 2 it says “…and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

Shoot! Are you sure the pruning is a sure part of the formula? This sucks as we both well know. BUT there is a promise of FULL joy for remaining in Him. Also, I was reminded that the branches can will with all of their might to grow faster, better, in this direction or that, or bear fruit before the season, but it’s a process that happens in it’s natural course by simply staying plugged into the vine.

All He’s really asking for us to bear MUCH fruit is that we stay plugged into the vine. As long as we do that, His sap, His very essence can’t not flow into us and cause us to grow into the person that we were meant to be.

Lar, you were a strategically designed branch made to bear a specific fruit. We share the knowledge that neither of us were designed to live a conventional life and do conventional things. That’s hard. The world at large was not designed the way we were and they don’t get it. They can’t even fathom outside of convention. Since we’re probably the minority, there isn’t a lot of support or ideas being thrown around that encourage us or enlighten us to the endless possibilities that are really out there.

We take the practical steps that we know how to take and He’ll do WHATEVER it takes to get you where He has for you. To do it all perfectly would make us not human and His power as God unnecessary.

I realize that while we know all of these things, it doesn’t make the journey any easier, but it is seeing Him prevail in the difficult situations in our lives that seals the deal for us, making it so that we cannot deny His power or our humanness.
